Greensleeves

One of my favorite songs ever is "Greensleeves". My sister used to play it on the piano when we were little and I used to just love to hear her. It would be my most requested when she would practice at the piano. It's a beautiful song that actually has an unusual history. It is traditionally an old English folk song that was believed to be written by Henry VIII for Anne Boleyn, however, even though he may have had this song played for her, he didn't write it. I don't think that it's ever been determined just who wrote it and when or what exactly the song is about, some think Lady Greensleeves was a prostitute or an immoral woman. In 1865, William Chatterton Dix used the tune from "Greensleeves" to write "What Child Is This" while he was bedridden with an illness. I usually associate the song with the hymn but I like both versions. Don't you just love Wikipedia? :)
